Hakeem Jeffries, take a lesson from Jasmine Crockett

Two months into Donald Trump’s second term, it’s safe to say we have little confidence in the current Democratic House leadership. The same tired, consultant-driven strategies have left us with two monumental losses and an emboldened far-right wing. Instead of confronting the reality and learning lessons from our losses, Democratic leadership seems more interested in policing its own members rather than fighting for the people who put them in office.

If Leader Hakeem Jeffries is looking for a lesson in what true leadership looks like in the minority, he should take notes from Dallas’s own Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett. While some Democrats wring their hands over polling numbers and messaging tweaks, she is doing what actual leadership requires - standing up, speaking out, and refusing to back down, no matter how uncomfortable it makes the establishment.

Crockett has never been one to mince words, whether she’s calling out Republican hypocrisy in committee hearings or demanding accountability from a Democratic Party that prioritizes caution over courage. She doesn’t check which way the wind is blowing before taking a stand - she leads. And guess what? That kind of authenticity resonates. Voters, especially younger and more diverse coalitions, aren’t looking for Democrats who try to play it safe. They’re looking for Democrats who will actually put in the work and fight for them.

Yet instead of embracing bold leaders like Crockett, Jeffries seems more interested in reigning them in. That’s a losing strategy. Voters don’t want a party that’s afraid of it’s own shadow, they want a party that stands for something.

The reality is that the old guard had its time - and that time is now up. If Democrats are serious about building a future where they aren’t just an opposition party but a governing majority, then the current leadership needs to step aside and make room for the next generation. A generation that understands we don’t win by diluting our values to make them more palatable to people who will never vote for us anyway. A generation that fights like hell because they know what’s at stake.

Jasmine Crockett is showing us what the future of the Democratic Party should look like. The question is whether the rest of the party is ready to follow - or if they will keep playing it safe while Republicans steamroll our democracy.
